Florida Oversize Permits & Cargo Dimension Limits

For vehicles up to 13'6" in height, neither pilot cars nor route surveys are required, and no special permit is needed.

  • At a height of 14'6", one pilot car is required for the transport; however, a route survey is not necessary, but a permit must be obtained.

  • When a vehicle's height reaches 15', one pilot car and a route survey are both required, and the operator must also secure a permit.

  • For heights of 16' and above, two pilot cars are mandated, a route survey must be conducted, and the appropriate permit needs to be in place.

Pilot cars are typically used to escort oversized loads and ensure the safety of the transport by alerting other road users. Route surveys are pre-travel assessments to ensure the chosen path can accommodate the oversized load without causing damage or incurring risks. Permits are legal authorizations to transport oversized loads that exceed standard legal dimensions.
